About the Author
Chapter One
Samira felt a hand wrap around her wrist and pull her out of the stream of people moving from the stairwell toward the emergency chambers. For a brief moment she resisted, worrying about those who had been wounded in the brief but intense battle that had just occurred in the corridor above, but then she heard Ty whispering her name and turned to see him standing in the doorway of a small room down a narrow hallway to the side of the stairs. He smiled at her and gestured for her to come with him into the room. She took another glance at those being carried or helped into the chamber where Ciyrs would attend to them and then allowed Ty to guide her into the room with him.
She turned toward her mate and offered him a smile. As she did he pulled her closer and she rested her hands on his chest, catching the sparkle of the ring of her finger in her gaze. In that moment, she remembered. He wasn’t just her mate. He was her husband. The thought filled her with excitement and joy and she rose up on her toes to press a kiss to his lips. Sh
e could taste the sweat of his exertion in the battle there and her happiness was slightly dampened. As she lowered back down and looked slightly away, Ty tucked his finger beneath Samira’s chin and lifted it up so that she was looking into his eyes again.
“How could this be happening?” she asked him softly.
“You knew what was happening with Ryan,” Ty told her. “You knew that there was conflict with Eden.”
“I didn’t know it was anything like this,” she argued. “I couldn’t have imagined that coming here for our wedding would have turned into this.” She glanced away and then back at him. “We missed our wedding day.”
“No, we didn’t,” Ty said. “We had our wedding. We got through the ceremony. We’re married. They can’t take that from us.”
Samira felt her lips turn up slightly into another smile. Ty was right. Even though they had tried to completely destroy the day by invading the wedding and kidnapping Lysander during the ceremony, the Valdicians hadn’t been entirely successful. They had been able to get through the entire ceremony which bound them in marriage, sealing their full and total commitment to each other with the kiss that the hooded creatures had broken with their sudden and horrifying appearance.
“I’m so happy that we’re married,” she told him. “It means more to me than you could understand.”
“I do understand,” Ty said. “Bonding for the Denynso is a precious and unshakable connection. It is something that we wait for throughout our entire lives. It is the most important and most meaningful of relationships that we will ever experience, and even though it is not exactly the same among humans, I can only imagine that the emotions that you feel regarding marriage would be as strong. I am proud to be able to give that to you. I’m proud to be the first Denynso warrior to marry.”
“Even though your wedding day and the first days of your marriage turned into this?” Samira asked.
“I’m a warrior, Darling. This is the life that I have always led and the one that I expect to always live. Every other day of my life has been defined by war. I’ve either been preparing the warriors for a battle, engaged in battle, or helping the men recover from a battle, since I was old enough to be out of my training.”
“But this was our wedding,” Samira said. “This is supposed to be such a beautiful and celebratory time in our lives, and instead of us being able to celebrate with the people who matter the most to us, we ended up in a fight that none of us expected and none of us could have been prepared for. I feel like we put our friends and family in so much danger.”
“No, Samira,” Ty said, taking her hands and bringing them up to his lips to kiss them tenderly. “You can’t think that way. People came from Uoria who had never left the planet at all, much less traveled so far across the galaxy to get to Earth just so that they could witness us getting married. It was an incredible journey for them and truly speaks to how much they care about us and about our marriage. What’s happened here isn’t our fault. This was all happening long before we planned to come here. Long before we even met. If it hadn’t happened when we were here for our wedding, it would have happened at another time. It might have even been worse. You can’t give Ryan even more power by not feeling the joy that we should at being married.”
Samira nodded.
“You’re right,” she said. Her heart swelled as she looked into Ty’s eyes, the sight of the color that had once shifted from their natural shade to the deep, rich orange that indicated that he had found her, now completely solid, an unchanging tangible reminder of the connection that they had. “I love you so much and I am so happy that we got to experience this together.”
“I only wish that we had been able to get to the reception,” Ty said.
“Why is that?” Samira asked.
“I had made you a special wedding cake as a surprise,” he said.
“You did?” Samira asked.
Ty nodded.
“Of course, I didn’t know anything about human weddings but I wanted you to be a part of the planning and I wanted to do something special for you to show you that I really did care about the wedding and wasn’t just doing it because you wanted to. So, I asked Zuri and Eden about weddings and they told me about the cake. They said that it was an important part of the reception and I figured that that was the best way that I could contribute something that was meaningful to you, but also a part of me.”
Samira felt tears stinging in her eyes.
“That’s so sweet,” Samira said. “Thank you. I wish that I could have seen it. I’m sure it was beautiful.”
“It was,” Ty agreed. “Besides that, it was delicious.”
He looked so disappointed at the thought that they hadn’t been able to eat the confection that he had created that Samira couldn’t help but laugh. Though Ty described himself as a warrior now, Samira knew that that was not how he had always been defined. Though he had trained as a warrior when he was young just as most of the men within the clan did, it had been clear that he was not destined to fight the way that the others did. Part way through his training the Denynso King had identified him as a nurturer, one of the Denynso specifically born to take care of the others within the clan. He had left his training early to become the apprentice of the nurturer of the time. Samira also knew that it wasn’t a shock to the others of the clan that Ty would not be the warrior expected of most of the children born into the village. His father had been different, too, though he had died when Ty was still a very small child.
It wasn’t until he was an adult that he learned it was not just his talents for baking and cooking that set him apart from the rest of the men in his clan. His blood was not pure Denynso, though no one other than Creia knew it. It was something that they hadn’t spoken much about, but it was this very reality that gave Ty the amazing gift of being able to control things with his mind. It had been instrumental in saving the lives of several of those he fought alongside, but it had also made confronting the creatures that had now become their enemies even more difficult.
“I promise when we get back to Uoria you can make me another wedding cake and we can celebrate.”
“But it won’t be a wedding cake anymore,” Ty said. “Would that make it less important to you?”
Samira shook her head.
“Of course not. Anything that you make for me will be special. And then we can enjoy it even more knowing that we are safe.”
Chapter Two
Pyra stood back and watched as more injured were brought into the third emergency chamber. There were enough bedrolls and blankets for them to lie on, but some had simply dropped to the floor when they got inside the room and were now scattered throughout the space awaiting the attention of Ciyrs or Elianna. His mind was reeling from what had just happened and his eyes struggled to focus on the makeshift bed that he had just created for Jem. He still couldn’t believe that he was seeing the young warrior before him. The Denynso leader and everyone else in the clan had thought he was gone, assuming that when he threw himself off the branch in the reflected realm beneath the Denynso compound on Uoria, that he had tumbled through some unknown space to his death. They had suffered through the loss of him and the emptiness that it had left in the clan for so long now that it had simply become a part of their daily living.
Now, though, he was watching as Jem’s face contorted in pain and Ciyrs desperately attended to the deep wound in his torso. Pyra was incredibly thankful that the healer was with them. Though he didn’t have all the supplies and amenities that he would in his clinic on Uoria, the items that he had brought with him in his kit would allow him to perform some basic procedures and healing on them. He wished that he could be closer to Jem. He wished that he could be right beside him, helping him alongside Ciyrs. Though he didn’t understand what was happening or how the young warrior returned to them, in that moment he didn’t really care. All that mattered to him was that Jem was alive and had come back to fight alongside them as they struggled to survive the labyrinth of the medical
wing and the laboratory. He didn’t want to let him out of his sight again, too afraid that if he did Jem would slip through his fingers and they would never have the chance to find him again.
One of the men who had arrived with Jem came to Jem’s side and offered his assistance to Ciyrs. Pyra watched as they worked, feeling disconnected from everything that was happening around him. The only other time that he could remember when he felt more helpless than he did at that moment was when he watched Eden give birth to their son, not being able in any way to help her get through the pain or to ensure that their baby would come into the world safely. In those moments, he had feared for Lysander and for Eden, but there had been a sense of completion as he listened to the baby’s first cries. Pyra was freed from the feeling of helplessness by the new sense of responsibility and awe that filled him when he first saw Lysander’s tiny face. Right now, Pyra couldn’t anticipate the feeling disappearing. He didn’t know what the completion of this situation would be or when it would come. There was likely far more ahead of them that they would have to face and it was his responsibility to be strong for everyone who followed him. It didn’t matter how he felt or what he was worried about. As the leader of the Denynso warriors, he had to be emotionless and think not of himself, but only of how he would lead everyone else through whatever they would face.
Suddenly his concentration on Ciyrs’s efforts to heal Jem were broken by the sound of Eden calling his name. He turned to see his mate rushing toward him.
“Pyra! I need your help.”
Pyra crossed the room toward Eden, reaching for her hands as she approached. Her eyes were wide and bright with fear and her delicate hands felt slightly tremulous in his.
“What is it?” he asked.
He felt a sense of panic within him that he fought to keep down. It was not tradition for the leader of the Denynso warriors to feel that level of fear, and it would be unacceptable for him to show it. The room around him was filled with his followers and allies, suffering from injuries that ranged from minor scratches and cuts to those so grievous he feared they may not all survive. The frantic way that she approached him meant that there may be something else happening that he hadn’t noticed in his effort to get Azrael into the temporary infirmary, but that may be even more serious than the horror that he was already witnessing.
